CALLING ALL artists and activists, thinkers and doers, young and young-at-heart, for a celebration of community and the struggle for liberation this MAY DAY!
May Day is a time to come together to celebrate solidarity and possibility. It’s an ancient holiday that welcomes the return of spring. Since the Haymarket Massacre in 1886 – the bombing of a peaceful workers’ rally for the 8-hour workday – it’s been recognized as the global International Workers’ Day. And, in recent years, it’s been tied to the movement for immigrants’ rights.
This May Day there’s even more reason to celebrate. Throughout 2011, people around the world rose up together and took a stand against social and economic injustice. To show that the strength of this unity just keeps growing there is a global call to join together on May 1st and leave our jobs, classrooms, and other obligations to enjoy a “vacation for the 99%.”
So, come on out and meet with friends and neighbors as we share our passions, support each others’ struggles and work to build a stronger community at the MAY DAY FESTIVAL 2012 at Malcolm X Park! There will be PUPPETS, PERFORMANCES, TEACH-INS, BIKE TOURS, KIDS GAMES, FOOD, a MARCH to the WHITE HOUSE and MORE, but it can’t happen without YOU!
- Have a creative action you want help coordinating? A skill you’d like to share? Or a topic you’d like to discuss?
- Are you a dancer, singer, band-member who wants to perform?
- Want to help sponsor food for the celebrations?
to join in making MAY DAY 2012 everything you want it to be!
